Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva, professionally known as Nina Dobrev, was born on January 9, 1989 in Sofia, Bulgaria to computer specialist Konstantin Dobreva and artist Mihaela Dobreva. She relocated with her family to Canada when she was two. She has an older brother, Aleksandar Dobrev.
She studied at J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School. There, she took ballet and jazz classes, as well as competed in rhythmic gymnastics. She later attended Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough, Ontario, and subsequently enrolled at Ryerson University in Toronto, where she majored in sociology. In 2008, she left college to pursue acting.
In 2006, she made her first film role as Monica in the Canadian feature Away from Her. That same year, landed her first television role as Mia Jones in the Canadian teen series Degrassi: The Next Generation, which she played from 2006 to 2009. Later in 2006, she played a part in the Canadian television film Playing House.
The following year, she played a minor role in How She Move, played Rachel in The Poet and landed the part of Bella in Fugitive Pieces. She also starred in the TV films Too Young to Marry and Never Cry Werewolf. In 2008, landed another minor role in Repo! The Genetic Opera and starred in the short film Mookie’s Law.
Her last project for 2008 was the TV movie The American Mall. Around this time, she also made guest appearances in such TV shows as The Border and Eleventh Hour. In 2009, she played the part of Anna in the erotic thriller Chloe, starring Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried.
Later in 2009, she reprised her role of Mia Jones in Degrassi Goes Hollywood, the film adaptation of the long-running series Degrassi: The Next Generation. Subsequently, she provided her voice for the role of Cupid the Reindeer in the animated TV film Merry Madagascar.
It was also in 2009 that Dobrev made her Hollywood breakthrough after landing the dual role of Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce in The CW’s drama The Vampire Diaries. The series premiered on September 10, 2009, where its pilot episode garnered the largest audience for The CW of any television series premiere since the network started in 2006. It remains the most watched show in the network and is currently in its fifth season.
Her role as Elena and Katherine also introduced Dobrev to a wider audience, gaining her instant fame. For her performance, she won the Teen Choice Awards for Choice TV Breakout Star – Female in 2010 and the People’s Choice Awards for Favorite TV Drama Actress in 2012.
Recent Films and Plastic Surgery
She was also nominated for Iconic TV Actress at the J-14 Teen Icon Awards in 2012 and for Favorite Dramatic TV Actress at the People’s Choice Awards in 2013. The following year, she and co-star Ian Somerhalder won the People Choice Awards for Favorite On-Screen Chemistry.
In 2011, she played a supporting role in the psychological thriller The Roommate, alongside Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly. The film garnered negative reviews but was a moderate box office success. Later that year, she played the role of Lori in the action film Arena, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kellan Lutz.
She was then cast as Candace Kelmeckis in 2012’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a film adaptation of the 1999 novel of the same name. The movie was met with positive reception and enjoyed commercial success, earning $33,384,127 against its $13 million budget.
Dobrev has also been in the middle of plastic surgery rumors. According to some reports, The Vampire Diaries actress went under the knife for a nose job. The subject even became more popular as old photos of the actress circulated online, showing her younger self.
It has been said that the Bulgarian beauty opted for a very subtle rhinoplasty to eliminate a small amount of cartilage on the tip and bridge of her nose. The result was fabulous, as others had pointed out. Despite the procedure, her new nose looks very natural and fits the contours of her face perfectly, giving her a new glow. Luckily for her, the surgery seemed to affect her career in a very promising way.
