Koffi was was born as Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba on July 13th, 1956, in Kisangani, Congo. When he was young, he improvised singing popular songs with his own lyrics and played guitar. He got a scholarship to study in France and gained a Bachelor’s degree in Business Economics. According to some sources, he has also a master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Paris.
Koffi returned to the Congo in the 70s and joined Viva la Musica, Papa Wemba’s band, as a composer and songwriter. Later he became a lead vocalist. In the 80s, he was part of the Papa Wemba musical. Koffi formed his own band named Quartier Latin in 1986 and built up a big fan base, mainly in Africa and Europe.
Koffi was also involved in the salsa music project named Africando. He received several awards, including the award for Best African Artist and the Kora Award for Best African Artist of The Decade.
