James Levine was born June 23rd, 1943, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Levine’s parents were artists, mother was an actress and father was a violinist. When he was little, he started playing the piano. He was only ten years old at the time of his solo concert debut in the the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Then he began music studies with the LaSalle Quartet violinist Walter Levin. He also had Rudolf Serkin as his piano teacher.
In 1964, James graduated from the prestigious Juilliard School. Then he joined the American Conductors project. For one year, he served as an apprentice, then for five years as an assistant conductor. In 1970, he debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra as a guest conductor.
