David won a scholarship to University College School in London, where he played the oboe. He also attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He started his acting career in the 1960s, playing Russian secret agent in the TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
David’s first marriage was with actress Jill Ireland, but she left him for Charles Bronson. They have three sons, Paul, Jason, who was adopted and unfortunately died from a drug overdose, and Val, who is a successful guitar player and a member of the Jackshit band.
