Garai was born to British parents in Hong Kong. Her mom, Janet A., raised Romola and her 3 siblings and her dad, Adrian E. R. Garai, is a bank manager. Her very first name may be the female version of the Italian name Romolo, among the creators of Rome, from Romulus. Romola is also the principal character of George Eliot’s book of the exact same name. Garai’s greatgrandfather, Bernhard “Bert” Garai, a Hungarian Jewish immigrant, started the Keystone Press Agency, a photographic agency and store, in London, within the early twentieth century.
