Martin was born on April 23th, 1951, in New York. At the age of eleven, he lost sight in his left eye in an accident. Four years later, Martin started scuba diving. He majored in geology at Brooklyn College and taught scuba diving. In 1972, he opened a dive shop named Brooklyn Divers Supply Corp. In 1975, he has become a Master PADI SCUBA instructor.
Bayerle started dive operations to shipwrecks, including the USS Turner, Mistletoe, Black Warrior, Oregon, and U-853. In 1978, Brooklyn Divers was cut off their source of supply and advertisements and Bayerle sued some SCUBA company defendants and reached a settlement. Then he closed up his operations in Brooklyn and started over in Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, obtaining a a captain’s and pilot’s license.
He established MAVIS – Martha’s Vineyard Scuba Headquarters, Inc. In 1981, after 2 and half years of research, Captain Martin Bayerle found the wreck of steam-powered ocean liner RMS Republic. After the discovery, he appeared in several TV programs. He is married and has two children, Tessa and Grant, with his wife Susan. As of 2016, Bayerle is appearing on Billion Dollar Wreck TV series.
