Mia was born in Selma, Alabama on March 17, 1972. She spent her childhood on US Air Force bases with her five siblings. She started playing soccer in Florence, Italy. Mia was at Women’s national team from 1987 to 2004 and attended Olympic Women’s Football Tournament three times in her career.She was a founding member of the Washington Freedom and she wrote the book Go For the Goal: A Champion’s Guide to Winning in Soccer and Life. Mia’s adopted brother, Garrett, died in 1997 of complications from aplastic anemia, a rare blood disease. That made her established the Mia Hamm Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to promote awareness and raise funds for families in need of a bone marrow or cord blood transplant.
